Food forests are one of the most productive and resilient land-use systems on earth — modelled on natural woodland ecology but designed to yield food, medicine, fibre, and habitat. This intensive 2-day course combines design theory with on-site practice.
Course outline:
• Ecology of natural forests and woodland succession
• The 7 layers of a food forest system
• Species selection for the Pacific Northwest
• Design methods: observation, mapping, and pattern language
• Establishment strategies: sheet mulching, guilds, and spacing
• Integrating animals: chickens, ducks, and pigs as land managers
• Agroforestry for small farms: silvopasture and alley cropping
• Long-term care, pruning, and harvesting
Field time on our demonstration food forest is included both days. Lunch provided on Saturday.
