Hempcrete Builder Series - Introduction to Hempcrete.

Hempcrete Building, 2024 Active Classes, 4-Day Classes, Natural & Sustainable Building

The two main hempcrete building systems that we will be covering in this course are Cast-in-place and hempcrete blocks. You will begin by learning proper framing techniques. Next you will learn how to properly mix hempcrete (hydraulic lime binder and Hemp Hurd) and what you should be looking for when you source materials. Learn how to create an efficient cast in place slip form and all the logistics involved in this process. Learn how to make you own forms to make hempcrete blocks and how to use premade blocks that are available in the market today.

DIY Tiny Building Class

The DIY Tiny Home class is for anyone considering building a Tiny Home. Man or woman, young or old it doesn’t matter. Don’t let people tell you that it can’t be done ... you can do it! By learning how to build your own tiny home, you can save more than $30,000 plus on labor costs alone. In addition, we will save you countless hours of wasted time evaluating building codes, materials, tools, technology, and “how to” videos. We have evaluated all of the materials used to ensure you will minimize your impact on the environment in terms of energy consumption, composition, and waste. Pond Design & Construction Weekend Workshop with Zach Weiss of Water Stories.

Pond design and construction

This workshop is designed to offer a crash course in pond construction. No experience is required for this workshop! If you are planning to build a pond on your property, this weekend class could save you $1,000’s of dollars! We will cover the fundamentals of pond building, such as assessing soil types, siting pond locations, constructing a keyed-in earthen dam, how to shape a pond, earthworks best practices, and much more! There will be an excavator and operator constructing a small pond throughout the weekend. We will transition between outdoor lessons, observing the construction process, and indoor presentations within the serene setting of Vernonia Springs' stunning pavilion.

Cob Oven Building Workshop

Join us for a hands-on, immersive 2-Day Cob Oven Workshop where you’ll learn the art of building a durable, efficient, and beautiful wood-fired cob oven from scratch! Guided by natural builder / bioarchitect Scott Howard of Earthen Hand Natural Building, this workshop will take you through every step of the process—from foundation design to firing up your first meal. No matter your age or abilities, this workshop is for you! It's a fun way to connect with like minds and get grounded in the adobe. Cob is a strong, beautiful, sculptural, and ancient building technology that is dirt cheap! Cob (internationally known as Adobe) is a Welsh word for “lump”—as in the wet lumps of clay sand and straw with which we build with as opposed to dried adobe bricks. It's fire proof, mold proof, bulletproof, and has no expiration date. Cob ovens are an ancient, sustainable, and versatile way to bake bread, roast vegetables, cook pizza, and more—all using locally sourced, natural materials. By the end of this workshop, you’ll have the skills and confidence to build your own cob oven at home, using simple tools and techniques that have been refined over centuries.

Hempcrete Builder Series - Lime Plaster for Construction.

2024 Active Classes, 5-Day Classes, Natural & Sustainable Building, Plaster Classes

In this lime plaster for construction course, we will learn about the lime cycle, sand gradation, bulking sand and making a balanced mix. What is a micro void or a water void and why you need to know about them. The historic masonry self-healing plasters are perhaps one of the most useful and underrated building materials that has been used in building for centuries. Lime has been used as a binder, to provide structure and strength to construction for thousands of years. It is also an incredibly effective way to protect your natural wall system for moister condensation is side the wall system. We'll move on to the proper application of historic lime exterior coatings. Finish this seminar with basic education on how to make a masonry wall with hempcrete blocks. You will gain extensive experience on how to make your own mixes, Application skills with a hawk and trowel techniques and when to wood float your lime plaster and why.
