Overview: In this lime plaster for construction course we will learn about the Lime cycle, sand gradation, bulking sand and making a balanced mix. What is a micro void or a water void and why you need to know about them. The historic masonry self-healing plasters are perhaps one of the most useful and underrated building materials that has been used in building for centuries. Lime has been used as a binder, to provide structure and strength to construction for thousands of years. It is also an incredibly effective way to protect your natural wall system from moisture condensation inside the wall system. We’ll move on to the proper application of historic lime exterior coatings. We will Finish this seminar with a basic education on how to make a masonry wall with hempcrete blocks. You will gain extensive experience on how to make your own mixes, Application skills with a hawk and trowel techniques and when to wood float your lime plaster and why.

You will need to bring: Any tools needed will be provided. Bring your own work gloves. You will need to wear long pants and long sleeve shirt. Brings clothes that you aren’t worried about getting dirty. If you won’t be renting one of our yurts or platform tents, bring your own tent, sleeping bag etc. as needed. If you will be sleeping in your RV or car, no hookups are available.

Accommodations:
Meals: All meals are provided. Vegetarian option is available. You will receive a menu at time of payment with your registration confirmation. Meals are tasty and nutritious. If you have dietary restrictions of any kind, you can bring food and store it in the shared refrigerator. Microwave will be available for use. No menu substitutions are allowed. There is one central fire pit. No other campfires or camp stoves are allowed due to fire danger. Filtered water is available at all times. Coffee is served with breakfast. Bring any other beverages you may want.
Yurts. There are 5 yurts available on a first come first serve basis. $175 fee includes all 4 nights (Friday – Monday). Select “yurt” during checkout. Yurts have linens, comforters, pillows, electricity and heat. Bring your own towel. 2 person max in each yurt. If you need a cot, let us know and we will set one up for you (bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel for the cot).
Platform Tents. There are 5 platform tents available on a first come first serve basis. $125 fee includes all 4 nights (Friday – Monday). Select “Platform Tent” during checkout. Platform Tents have linens, comforters, pillows, and electricity (no heat). Bring your own towel. 2 person max in each platform tent. If you need a cot, let us know and we will set one up for you (bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel for the cot).
Bring Your Own Tents and RV’s. You can bring your own tent and or RV at no additional cost. Select “Tent/RV” during checkout. You also have the option of sleeping in your car at no additional cost. No hook ups are available. 30 foot maximum RV or Car + Trailer length. Camping with full hookups is available 3 miles up the road at Stubb Stewart State Park.
Wifi. is available around lodge area.
Bathrooms and Hot Showers: There is a bathroom/shower building with flush toilets and hot showers. Bring your own towels, and biodegradable bath products.
Fires: There is one central fire pit. No other fires or cook stoves are allowed due to extreme fire danger.
Bicycle: Bring a bike if you would like to ride the Banks-Vernonia State Trailer on your free time or after the workshop ends.

Tim White is a pioneering leader in the sustainable building industry. He began his journey as a young man growing up on a small family farm in the 1970s and 1980s before going on to serve honorably as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, Tim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Biology from Luther College. In 1997, he opened his own business, Mountain Stream Builders LLC, specializing in natural wall systems and historic lime and clay plasters. He then went on to develop hands on educational programs and research & development for American Clay Enterprises LLC from 2006-2009. His achievements have earned him recognition among his peers including receiving the US Hemp Building Association 2023 Best Building of the year award for completing the 2400-square foot hempcrete “Hondo House” in Hondo, Texas. Beyond this award, Tim has been featured in numerous articles and publications regarding natural building systems, made appearances on DIY Network & Off Grid Living TV shows, and presented at Adobe USA Conferences multiple times in the past. As an expert in natural building systems, it is his mission to share his knowledge so that others may benefit from it … a true testament to Tim’s commitment to sustainability.
Payment Options: Payments will be accepted up to 14 days before workshop start date or until workshop is full. You can pay a 20% deposit to hold your spot. Balance is due 60 days before the event start day. All payments are non-refundable within 60 days of course start date. Must be 15 years and older to attend. No animals are allowed. See course description below for more information on schedule, meals and available overnight accommodation options. Yurt and Platform tent reservations are first come first serve and must be paid with a credit card (5 yurts and 5 platform tents are available).
